The extension of tram line 9 (Simonis-Arbre Ballon) to Roi Baudouin station will continue in 2020. The site reopened in early May, after a few weeks of stoppage due to lockdown. In addition to a dedicated tram lane, the project, led by Brussels Mobility, includes the complete development of the public space along the line, as well as the redevelopment of the Stade terminus to create a multimodal hub in conjunction with lines 3 and 7 on the Heysel plateau. This will facilitate connections between the three lines, creating a real bypass in the north of the city.

Other projects to extend the tram network are in preparation. The route of the new NOH tram line was agreed in 2020. This new line will connect Neder-over-Heembeek to the city centre. The Neder-over-Heembeek district has grown considerably over the last 15 years (housing, community infrastructure, public services). The route of the new tram line will link this booming district to Place Rogier, while serving a multitude of public infrastructures (schools, crèches, sports centres, military hospital), as well as numerous shops and businesses. STIB will submit the planning application in 2021. Work is scheduled to begin in 2022. The new tram line itself is due to open in autumn 2024.
